Having read conflicting information about evicting lodgers, is it best to court order rather than just change the locks and if so why?

Even though a Court Order isn’t required, it’s still a criminal offence to change locks when somebody is in the room objecting to the change of locks ie violence may be required to remove. There could also be repercussions with it being the landlords personal home. That’s why many get an order even if not necessarily required.
