Some time ago, HMRC contacted us and provided details of some e-learning products and webinars they provide for landlords and self employed persons. At first glance, they seem to be quite impressive and helpful.
There are a number of offerings including live webinars, view previous recordings and online slideshow products – all free of charge.
I do appreciate most peoples tax returns will be sorted by now (everything must be done by 31 January) but maybe these will be useful for 2014 – 2015 accounts.
HMRC are regularly producing live webinars for self employed people. Lots of topics are covered including a specific one titled: “Property income and HMRC”. The self employed webinars cover topics including:
- Self-employment and HMRC: what you need to know
- Business expenses for the self-employed
- Capital allowances for the self-employed
- HMRC digital services
- Self-employment and your online tax return
- Record keeping for the self-employed
- Simpler Income Tax: cash basis and simplified expenses
The more general self employed webinars seem to be produced quite regularly and several times a month whereas the property income one seems to be about once a month.
HMRC also provides a useful e-learning course specifically aimed at landlords. The system used is a simple intuitive slideshow style and is very easy to use. Although it only covers the basics, there is still lots of information.
Property rental toolkit
Another thing produced by HMRC is a “Property rental toolkit”. This provides guidance for tax agents and advisers on common errors on property rental in tax returns. It may also be helpful to a landlord completing an Income Tax Self Assessment Tax Return.
The current one available on the above link is for the year 2013 – 2014 but I expect 2014 – 2015 will be available soon.
