How to split bills

15 May 2018 | 1 comment

Hi,

I have a HMO with 5 tenants. On was away for a few months and she doesn’t want to pay any bills for this period. I normally split the gas and electric 5 ways between them. 3 have agreed to split 4 ways but 1 thinks it’s unfair and is only willing to pay 1/5th. Is the tenant that was away liable for the bills?

Thanks,

Tom

In respect of electricity, we believe if they have agreed to a certain way of dealing with bills (i.e. a straight split and not based upon usage) then that remains regardless of somebody being away.

However, in respect of gas heating, the position is more complex because if you are billing more than one person (as here), you must bill them according to actual usage individually.
