Today we are pleased to announce the launching of a new subscribers page and some much better ways to find answers to your questions by way of new knowledge bases.
The subscribers page is always the starting point for subscribers to the Guild as it contains all the main links that are used most regularly.
The “main links” are now right at the top of the page and are the first thing you see.
Further down is a new “self-help” section (more on this in a moment).
Next you can search the entire website with a large Ajax based search box. This will search the entire website so should only be used as a last resort because you could get lots of returned results!
Next is the featured discounts and then finally, membership information which includes links to edit profile, change password, renew subscription and so on. To the right of this is our usual Twitter feed.
You will notice that all the rest from the old page has been stripped away. All the guidance and services have been moved into our new knowledge bases …
Self-help Landlord Handbook (Knowledge Base)
As our website and membership has grown, so has the number of pages on our website. It was starting to get difficult to find things, especially when using the search because the term “section 21” or “rent” etc. would return a large number of hits. A better way was needed.
We are pleased to launch today our new knowledge bases which are based on the landlord handbooks we publish in partnership with Training for Professionals. There is also a dedicated knowledge base for admin, tech support and subscription queries.
All the content from the England landlord handbook has been inserted into a knowledge base. All the links are ready to go for Wales but the content is to be copied yet. For the moment, the PDF handbook for Wales can be downloaded but it will be incorporated into the website soon (it’s the next thing to do).
There are six main categories to the knowledge base:
- Responsibilities and Liabilities
- Start of a Tenancy
- During the Tenancy
- Ending a Tenancy
- Featured Links
Within each main category is a sub-category so for example under “during the tenancy”, there are sub-categories of:
- Periodic and Other Visits
- Tenant Obligations
- Entry and Refusal
- Changing the Terms
- Changing the Rent
- When and if the Tenant Can Leave During the Tenancy
- Preventing Controlling and Recovering Rent Arrears
- Nuisance and Anti-Social Behaviour
- Tenant Relations and Dealing With Complaints
Under each sub-category are articles about the particular subject. Some of them are taken from the landlord handbook and others are links to existing articles on our website. The handbook content is generally a basic summary of a particular subject whereas articles we write for the website are generally quite detailed and referencing specific legislation or case law.
When browsing handbook content, a sidebar on the page remains visible which means going through content is super quick and simple.
Each article has an icon which represents what the content is at a glance. For detailed information about each icons meaning, see here.
Finally, one of the best ways to find information is now to directly search within each specific handbook knowledge base. So if you are trying to find a query relating to a property in England, go to the England handbook and try searching. This will only provide results from within the handbook and not the entire website. This should filter down results to what is relevant and make finding answers easier. The same is true for Wales (when it’s up and running on the website) and for admin or subscription queries.
We hope you enjoy these significant changes and as always if you have any feedback or suggestions, please let us know. Also, if you find an article on the website which you think should be within one of the handbook knowledge bases, please do let us know. We’ve tried to think of the all the common links but we intend to grow the links over time.
