Student Tenancy Checks – which ones?

13 Jul 2017 | 2 comments

As a mandatory requirement we have undertaken the ‘right to rent’ checks (passport etc) – however, as they are using student loans to pay for the rent – do we need to do further ‘credit’ checks? What is mandatory in these cases? We have looked at the standard tenant checks but not sure of the relevance for students.

Only the right to rents are mandatory. Credit checks are optional for the landlords protection. However, in reality, a credit check on a student is difficult and often not worthwhile because they won’t have sufficient credit history to have a good report. Instead, many landlords obtain a guarantor.
