Re Section 8 was served in May 2020, is it still valid?

Tenant was served Section 8 on 5th May 2020.  He signed a copy via Signable which was e-signed by both landlords.  The tenant at that time owed £1549. He now owes £6,580.  The rent is £695 pcm.  We have tried to work with the tenant because of Covid.  He said he was going to leave of his own accord.  It looks like we now need to go to court.  Is the Section 8 that was served still valid and the most appropriate way for eviction?

A new one will need to be served because a section 8 notice must be acted upon within 12 months from when served.
